The Sportsman Inn & Carvery is a truly traditional old English pub that has stood here for over 300 years – so the atmosphere really is set in stone! Set in the heart of the Sportsman Inn & Leisure complex and serving a 8-hand-pulled Cask Marque accredited real ales as well as traditional food, its ideal for a day out or a meal whilst enjoying all the other facilities here.
Owned by the Carney family for 20-years, the Inn got its name because it was regularly used by the local gentry who stabled their horses and spent the day hunting in the Shibden Valley - panoramic views of which delight our guests. With low beamed ceilings, an open fire and a welcoming atmosphere, please do call in and enjoy a sample of any of the selection divine real ales.
The Sportsman is open every lunchtime (except Monday) and every evening during the week and from 12-noon to midnight at weekends. Food is available Tuesday to Friday lunchtime and in the evening from 4 to 9pm.
On Saturdays and Sundays, meals are served from midday to 9pm (6.30pm on Sunday).
A Little History
The Sportsman Inn has existed as a pub since at least 1700 gaining its name from the ‘sportsmen’ who exchanged rabbits, hare and other game for ale.
In the 60’s George and Ashley made the pub famous with its unique character – many customers remember trying to evade the geese on the way to the toilets.
In 1988 the bar in the Sportsman was extended and the stone floored tap room was extended into the large family room it is today. The squash courts, solarium and sauna built alongside the ski slope were replaced in 1996 with the building of Charlie Fastrax the indoor kids’ adventure playground.
In the year 2000 the old Dendex slope was replaced by the new ‘Snowflex’ carpet invented by Briton Engineering in Huddersfield making an ideal surface for snowboarders as well as skiers.
In 2006 the conservatory was completed in Charlie Fastrax making a room large enough to hold up to 200 people.
With a cyber café and smart golf being added to the complex in the past few years the Sportsman has developed from the small country pub on the old trading route between Bradford and Halifax into a varied entertainment complex for the 21st century.
